TOKENS AND WEIGHTS, 4th-6th centuries. Host coin a follis of Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Weight of 1 Semissis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.23 g), Ticinum, 325. Blank and engraved with eight-pointed star. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS / Q T Camp gate two turrets and no doors; above, star. For coin type, RIC 189. Edge serrated and the obverse flattened and with an engraved stare. Attractive earthen highlights over a dark patina. Attempted puncture on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

The purpose of such serrated pieces is debated, however, their use as weights for solidi and semisses among the numerous evidently weight-standardized pieces of around 4 and 2 grams, respectively, is very likely.
